PRODUCTIONS - VIDEO

Some of my work is making videos for clients. I also make video interviews sometimes because it is just good to do them. This I enjoy doing and try to bring an original slant to them It's more possible on some productions than others. Projects have ranged from 3D experiments in Italy to corporate factory tours in the UK. Everything depends on budgets, equipment, time allowed and the current level of expertise which improves with experience. Here are some samples of productions, some more recent than others and some on higher budgets than the others. Other reference materials can be supplied on request as I do not have the permissions necessary to publish them here.

Screen shot 2010-07-07 at 12.08.14 Uhr

  • INTERVIEW - Nuria Schönberg-Nono
Screen shot 2010-07-07 at 12.15.27 Uhr
Nuria talks about her father's composition "Pierrot Lunaire" as part of video productions made for the Arnold Schönberg Center exhibition "Arnold Schönberg - Wer Ich Bin - Who I am" that I directed with Nuria. The exhibition is running currently at the ASC. This was shot in Venice where Nuria runs the Foundation dedicated to the work of her late husband Luigi Nono www.luiginono.it
  • VIDEO - Violin Maker in Vienna
Screen shot 2010-07-07 at 12.41.53 Uhr
A short promotional video for Anna Weinberger-Hohenegger who has her studio in the Annagasse just off the Kärtnerstrasse in Vienna. A video collage to music by Sibelius that I recorded for a CD production some years ago with the Chamber Academy Quartet.
  • INTERVIEWS - Paul Moor
Screen shot 2010-07-07 at 12.53.42 Uhr
A series of interviews with TIME/LIFE journalist Paul Moor. These are eye witness accounts and impressions about his relationships with musical personalities. Here he describes his research into the denazification process of Richard Strauss.
  • INTERVIEW - Sigrid Esche-Braunfels
Screen shot 2010-07-07 at 12.48.30 Uhr
A lovely lady who resides in Munich and an expert on the works of Adolf von Hildebrand. She has an amazing memory and I interviewed her about her recollections for example of the times just pre-WWII when Hitler appended Austria to Germany. She describes here about how he was received at the time (in German).
  • INTERVIEW - Florian Steiner
Screen shot 2010-07-07 at 13.03.28 Uhr
This is an excerpt 2006 documentary material shot in Asolo, Italy with photographer eccentric Floriano Steiner. He is outspoken and was a friend of Henry Miller the author. There is a lot more where this comes from but not suitable for uploading here (or anywhere else for that matter).
  • COMMENT - Hermann Levi
Screen shot 2010-07-07 at 14.24.15 Uhr
Hermann Levi was a jewish conductor who premiered the opera Parsifal by Richard Wagner. He was very good friends with Johannes Brahms and Anton Bruckner and basically one of the most significant musical personalities of his time (he died in 1900). What I can't understand is why the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Bavaria manages to celebrate another resident, Richard Strauss, who was given a very good amount of help and inspiration by Levi, to excess, seeing that Strauss probably only moved there because of the proximity to Levi... anyway, Garmisch has managed to allow the gravesite of Levi to remain dilapidated and shamefully neglected. It is simply embarrassing. I have tried for years to gently encourage the town mayor to take this matter seriously as, especially due to Bavarian history and Levi's religious background, which of course has nothing to do with this, it just looks really bad, and, if word got out in certain quarters about this, the political faux pas might be good have been avoided rather than fired by inaction. I'll put this now here and on YouTube and point a few people in the right direction. Maybe that will shift them. Mail me if you would like some information about this.
  • VIDEO - Promotion of the ballet score Rich Bitch - Hotel - ambiguous duplicity
Screen shot 2010-07-07 at 13.37.57 Uhr
This is a kind of "Making of" short and quite quickly knocked together promotional video just after we recorded the demo of my ballet score. It's done quite well introducing my compositions to potential clients and also got me some video work so I won't criticise it too much. The excerpts from the recording can be found here : Audio Excerpts
  • SLIDES - Sir Hubert von Herkomer
Screen shot 2010-07-07 at 14.26.09 Uhr
Sir Hubert von Herkomer was a fascinating man. A basically forgotten inventor and pioneer as well as an amazing portrait painter. One of the characters that has fascinated me, so, I took some of his portraits and placed them over the first pas de deux music from the ballet score Rich Bitch. Just for something to do and to awaken a bit more interest in Sir Hubert maybe.
  • EDUCATION - Prof. Dr. Ifor James
Screen shot 2010-07-07 at 13.47.31 Uhr
I run a channel on YouTube called Hornchannel. This is where I put various Horn related bits of video. Some years ago Ifor explained that he was suffering from cancer and wanted to record information that he thought would be useful to future generations. I volunteered although I had never actually done this before. I learn a lot not only about horn playing but also about recording levels, microphone noise, green screen replacement and general video editing. Ifor died sadly shortly after making these with me but thankfully I can slowly but surely get around now to sharing these invaluable lessons with those interested in them.
  • EDUCATION - Prof. Hans Pizka
Screen shot 2010-07-07 at 14.02.33 Uhr
Another victim of my camera some years ago. Hans explains the context of playing a rather difficult bit of a Wagner Opera (Siegfried) that involves the horn player standing at the side of the stage whilst the tenor singer mimes with a horn on stage. All good stuff for horn players. Most baffling probably for anyone else.
  • EDUCATION - Prof. Roland Berger
Screen shot 2010-07-07 at 13.52.20 Uhr
Roland Berger was for over 5 decades the solo horn player in the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. He was also an influential a teacher as his teacher was before him. This dynasty of horn players upholds a valuable tradition in Vienna and, after making friends with Roland many years ago when I was a starving student (he fed me occasionally) I can now stick a camera in front of him and capture some of the vast amounts of information he possesses.
  • EDUCATION - Greg Cass
Screen shot 2010-07-07 at 13.56.18 Uhr
Greg is also one of those people who has given up valuable time to record informative teaching videos with me. This series deals with orchestral repertoire and offers valuable hints on how best to perform various really difficult pieces. As a solo horn player in The Suisse Romande Orchestra for over 25 years, he knows his stuff and his dry humour is amazing.
